Two thieves came to a house to steal something. They dug a hole in the wall of the house.
There lived many mice in the house. The woman in the moonlight saw a mouse crawl (爬行) into the house. "Look! In comes one," she said to the man in the house. The thief was so frightened(害怕的) that he hurriedly crawled out of the house and said to the one waiting outside, "She found me when I was just in." But the thief outside didn’t believe him, so he said, "Let’s try to crawl into the house together." At that time two mice happened to crawl into the house, too. The woman saw the mice and shouted, "In come two. Catch them!" The two thieves were terribly frightened. The man in the house said, "You saw them come in but where are they? I will catch them tonight." The two thieves started running away at once.
The two thieves wanted to make it clear whether they had been found or not the night before. The next day they acted as men selling sweet potatoes and came before the house. The man and the woman were ploughing in their fields. The rope broke and the woman came home for a rope. She saw two men selling sweet potatoes and wanted to buy some. She picked out two which looked like mice. At the time the man couldn’t wait for her any longer in the fields and he ran back from the fields to hurry her up. The woman showed the sweet potatoes to the man and said, "How they look like the two of last night." The man said, "I asked you to fetch a rope. Why don’t you hurry for it?" Hearing this, the two thieves ran away very quickly without their sweet potatoes.

It’s great fun to explore (探索) new places — it feels like an adventure, even when you know you’re not the first to have been there. But make sure not to get lost or waste time going round in circles.
Do the map reading if you’re being driven somewhere. It’ll be easier if you keep turning the map. Keep looking ahead so that you can give the driver lots of warning before having to make a turn, or you’ll have to move to the back seat.
Get a group of friends together and go exploring. You’ll need a good map, a compass (指南针), a raincoat, a cell phone to call for help in case you get lost, and a bit of spare cash for emergencies(应急现金). Tell someone where you’re going before you set out and let them know what time you expect to be back. The test is in not getting lost, not in seeing how fast you can go, so always stay together, waiting for slower friends to catch up.
See if your school or a club organizes orienteering activities, in which you need a map and a compass to find your way. This can be done as a sport, with teams trying to find the way from A to B (and B to C, etc.) in the fastest time, or simply as a spare-time activity. Either way, it’s not only good fun, but a great way to keep fit.
( )4. Sitting beside the driver, you should ________.
A. show the driver the way when necessary
B. look ahead to see where there’s a turn
C. talk to the driver happily
D. keep looking at the map to find a place to go to
( )5. Why do you need to tell someone your
exploration plan before starting?
A. To get information when in danger.
B. To be saved in case of an accident.
C. To share the fun with him / her in the exploration.
D. To tell him / her what’s going on with the group members.
( )6. Orienteering activities can ________.
A. make people work fast
B. help people stay healthy
C. help people organize other activities
D. make people get prepared for sports
( )7. The text mainly talks about ________.
A. the fun of exploration
B. what to bring for exploration
C. the way to use the map in exploration
D. how to prevent getting lost in exploration
When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn’t understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laugh turned into crying.
So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering crying does so.
Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure (减少压力) is important to our emotional(情感的) health, and crying seems to work well. One study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report they feel better after crying.
Besides, tears draw help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendlier and they are more ready to offer support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don’t even know we’re very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.
Just as crying can be healthy, not crying — holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering — can be bad for physical health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don’t fight it. It’s a natural healthy and emotional response (反应).
( )8. Why didn’t the writer cry when her grandmother died?
A. Because her father did not want her to feel too sad.
B. Because she did not love her grandmother.
C. Because she was too shy to cry at that time.
D. The writer doesn’t give the explanation.
( )9. It can be learned from the text that ______.
A. there are two ways to keep healthy
B. laughing does more good to health than crying
C. crying and laughing play the same roles
D. emotional health has a close relationship to physical health
( )10. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Power of Tears B. How to Keep Healthy
C. We Must Cry D. A New Scientific Discovery
For a few years, I have been wearing a ring on my right hand. It’s not always the 11 ring, but it’s always a ring that has 12 on it so that when I look at it, I’m 13 or reminded(使……想起) of something important. They weren’t at all sure 20 her son was going to survive (挺过) the accident that had hurt him so badly. With 21 in her eyes she said, "They’re 22 my hope."
I knew then that it was 23 just a coincidence (巧合) that I was wearing the ring that I had on that day. As she 24 to talk, I 25 took the ring off my finger and placed it in Jennie’s hand. I told her to wear it to remember that God loved her and he would be with her 26 all of this. 27 Jennie looked down at the ring, she got excited and then held it tightly, 28 the word written on the ring was "HOPE".
The last day I was at the hospital, I saw Jennie in the distance as I got on the lift. She 29 and held up the hand with the ring on it as she called out to me saying, "Look, I 30 have Hope!"

Last summer holiday, I go to Dalian with my parents. We traveled there on air. Dalian is a very beautiful and modern city. In morning, we arrived at the hotel. After breakfast, we began us tour. First, we took a bus to Sea Park. There were such many different kinds of fish that I couldn’t believe my eye. Then we had lunch in a restaurant. The seafood, which is well-known, was delicious.
